Malta, a complementary jurisdiction to Luxembourg for emerging fund managers

We sat down with Filip Suchta, Branch Director and Country Head of the Q-Securities Malta branch, and a member of Finance Malta. Q-Securities is a Polish-based investment firm, licensed for the safekeeping of financial instruments and providing depository services in Poland, Luxembourg, and, since 2023, Malta. This new location allows them to serve emerging fund managers from across the globe.

The Move to Malta: Strategic Decisions

Identifying the limitations emerging fund managers faced in Luxembourg, Q-Securities began exploring alternative jurisdictions. Filip explained that Malta emerged as the ideal choice due to its English-speaking environment, robust regulatory framework, transparent and approachable regulators, and a vibrant market atmosphere.

"From the outset, we aimed to fill market niches, supporting fund promoters unable to find depository services," Filip shared. "We saw Luxembourg as a gap in the market, particularly for smaller, emerging fund managers. However, as Luxembourg became less accessible to these managers, we sought a viable alternative."

Malta's Unique Appeal

Filip emphasized Malta's evolution as a versatile fund jurisdiction. Historically seen as a hedge fund hub, Malta has diversified its offerings over the past few years, making it attractive for various investment strategies, including liquid securities, private debt, bonds, real estate, private equity, venture capital, and digital assets.

"Malta's maturing regulatory framework and innovative fund structures make it the perfect environment for personalized, flexible service," Filip noted. "This ensures that fund managers are well-supported as they grow."

Building a Strong Presence

Since establishing their branch, Q-Securities has built strong relationships with market players and acquired their first clients, laying the groundwork for a successful future. Filip highlighted that Malta serves as a complementary jurisdiction to Luxembourg, particularly for emerging fund managers.

"Our goal is to continue evolving Malta's fund ecosystem, offering the best regulation and service while maintaining the personal connection that sets us apart," Filip said. "We believe Malta offers the perfect environment for fund managers looking for personalized and adaptable service."

Looking Ahead

Filip expressed pride in what Q-Securities has accomplished and excitement for the future. The firm envisions Malta not just as a stepping stone but as a potential long-term home for fund managers, providing a personal touch and close-knit community feel.
