Endowment

An endowment is a financial asset pool established by a nonprofit organization or educational institution to fund operations and generate investment income. Many major universities and foundations have endowments ranging from tens of millions to over $50 billion. Endowments commonly allocate a portion of their portfolios - often 5-15% - to alternative investments like private equity, venture capital, and hedge funds. The long-term orientation of endowments suits the extended holding periods of private equity and venture investments.
